Fewer Stops, Improved Service

Fewer Stops, Improved Service

Bus stops are the key to our business. Without them, folks won’t know where to stand and drivers won’t know where to stop.

Over the years, bus stops have taken hold in places they do not belong. Some are in right turn lanes, or at the entrances to driveways. Others are in places the where disabled cannot reach.

We’re changing that.

Beginning this week, Hampton Roads Transit will mark 350 bus stops on routes in the cities of Newport News and Hampton with notices that they will be removed.

The reduction in stops will eliminate unnecessary stops, allow customers to better understand what routes serve their stops, where those routes go, and help bus operators work towards greater bus schedule compliance.

No Stop Here

Removal of the signs begins June 25, 2012.

Once the excess signs are removed, Hampton Roads Transit will install our new bus stop signs at all remaining stops beginning July 1 to Dec. 31, 2012 in these two cities.

The new signs are an improvement over the old because they will provide more route information, maps of routes, days and hours of operation, stop identification numbers, and a list of all routes serving a particular stop. New signs are already in place at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

The new “lollipop” design is distinctive, easily seen at night, features Hampton Roads Transit’s new logo, and stands out from other traffic control signs.

Removal and replacement of old signs on Southside routes begins in 2013.

Bus stops that have been removed will not be marked with new signs.
