Lost & Found

Hampton Roads Transit is not responsible for personal items left on buses, ferries or light rail vehicles.  A personal item can be anything from a purse, a wallet, a cell phone or a bicycle.

Any lost item that is turned in by a customer or an HRT employee will be sent to the Customer Service Department.

Lost items are generally held for 10 days. After that, the item will be donated to a recognized local charity.  Items that contain identification will be held for 20 days while efforts are made to contact the owner.  After 20 days, passports will be mailed back to the Department of State while driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards will be mailed back to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.  In all cases, medicine will be disposed of after 5 days in Lost and Found.

Perishable items will be discarded immediately. If contact cannot be made by phone and an address is available, the item will be mailed to the corresponding address. For all other items, customers can contact our offices by choosing one of the Lost and Found procedures listed below.

No employee of HRT can lay claim to a customer’s personal property for any reason.

Lost and Found pick up window hours

Our window is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The lost and found pick up window is closed on weekends and all federal holidays. It is located at 509 E. 18th St., Norfolk, VA 23504 for Southside services, and 3400 Victoria Blvd, Hampton, VA, 23661 for Peninsula routes.

Telephone support

HRT Lost and Found staff members are available via telephone to provide assistance Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by calling (757) 222-6100. The Lost and Found offices are closed on weekends and all federal holidays.

How to file a claim

Online – The easiest and most efficient way to report a lost item is to email customerservice@hrtransit.org. Please provide your name, phone or email address, and a description of the lost item. Please also include the date item was lost, bus or rail information and time of day. Once submitted, all of your lost item information will be accessible by Lost and Found personnel. You will receive a confirmation email stating the information has been received and will be reviewed by the Lost and Found department. If the item has been found a customer service representative will contact you at the telephone or email contact information provided to the customer service department.

Phone – If you prefer, you can report your lost item by phone. You may contact our Lost and Found office at (757) 222-6100 Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., excluding national holidays. A customer service representative will record your information and forward the information to our Lost and Found department. If the item has been found a customer service representative will contact you at the telephone contact information or email that was provided to the customer service department.

Please note – You will only be contacted if a match is found for your item. If you are not contacted, it means that your item was not recovered. HRT makes every attempt to return lost items to the rightful owner.
