Hampton Roads Transit has been awarded a $1.8 million federal grant that will go toward the purchase of a new Elizabeth River ferry.
The grant award, from the Federal Highway Administration’s Ferryboat Discretionary Grant program, requires a 20 percent local match contribution, bringing the total to $2.2 million, according to a HRT news release. The 20 percent contribution will be paid out from the advanced capital contribution fund, which the cities pay into so that HRT can match funds in cases like this.
HRT wants to purchase a larger ferry that will allow passengers to board and exit simultaneously.
