HRT Rolls out Safety Campaign

Hampton Roads Transit will launch a major component of its light rail safety campaign on Saturday, August 28 with a public invitation to Safe-T Fest, a regional safety festival aimed at educating children and young adults on the importance of train safety.

Safe-T Fest will be held at Harbor Park from 1-4 p.m. Free and open to the public, Safe-T Fest will include games, educational kiosks, free food and drinks and an opportunity to meet a new regional mascot: Safe T.

Safe-T Fest is part of HRT’s broad-based effort to educate residents of Hampton Roads – and especially those along the 7.4-mile light rail route – that train safety is a shared responsibility of HRT and the public.

The campaign is based on the word SAFETY, an acronym that will be used to convey important messages to customers who will use The Tide. The acronym SAFETY stands for:

  • Stay alert, don’t get hurt!
  • Anytime is train time!
  • Forget shortcuts!
  • Everyone should obey signs and signals!
  • Tracks are for trains!
  • You! Safety starts with you!

The SAFETY message is based upon industry best practices and the unique system features of The Tide. While other safety outreach efforts have been underway since during light rail construction, Safe-T Fest is the first large public event focused on safety during rail operations. The safety campaign will continue though the start of The Tide revenue operations and will be a permanent part of HRT operations.
