Lease on Norfolk’s Harbor Park nears its end

A new playing field inside Harbor Park and parking solutions outside of it are expected to be central elements in lease negotiations between the Norfolk Tides and the city.

Talks are slated to begin next month to replace the original 20-year lease that bound the city and the New York Mets, who owned the Triple-A franchise.

A group led by Tampa, Fla., businessman Ken Young, now the Tides president, finalized purchase of the franchise early in the 1993 season, the first at Harbor Park.
