25.  How does the current Project fit into the larger plan for transit on the Peninsula?

The Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) has an adopted Long Range Transportation Plan for the region for the year 2026. That plan includes improvement to the existing transit services provided by HRT on the Peninsula. The Plan anticipates both improved bus service as well as the development of new transit services such as those included in this study.

26.  How is this Project related to the Third Crossing?

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been studying a potential “Third Crossing” for Hampton Roads in the vicinity of  the existing Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel. This study examined an additional tunnel crossing which would allow some portion of the tunnel to be used for transit services – either bus or rail. A Final Environmental Impact Statement has been completed but according to VDOT, funding sources are currently unavailable. Our study does not include the third crossing but if the third crossing does proceed, HRT would want to examine how this Project could make use of that crossing in the future.

27.  How does this fit into the plan for Light Rail Transit on the Southside?

The Light Rail Transit (LRT) project on the Southside is proceeding as a separate project.   However, information developed as part of those studies may be useful in completing this study.

28.  How does this Project fit into plans for High Speed Rail?

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT) is studying several alignments for a future High Speed Rail service between Richmond and South Hampton Roads. Two of the potential alignments serve the Newport News/Hampton area and might be close to the alignments proposed in this HRT study. HRT will coordinate its work with VDRPT so that any alignment decisions from either study will be compatible.  For more information on High Speed Rail, you can visit VDRPT’s project web site at www.rich2hrrail.info
