NORFOLK — Construction on Norfolk’s light rail system is moving along.

In the next few days, several downtown streets will be closed for the next phase of work.

Monday’s rain could impact the start of work at the intersection of Bank Street and Plume Street, which was due to close for about 45 days around March 31.

About the same time, the intersection of Granby Street and Charlotte Street will close for approximately 90 days.

By the end of this week, paving will be complete at the intersection of Charlotte Street and Monticello Avenue.

The Tide light rail will extend 7.4 miles from Newtown Road on the city line with Va. Beach to Eastern Virginia Medical School/Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.    It will have 11 stations along the route that winds through downtown Norfolk.

It’s expected to be completed in May 2011 at a cost of $338,284,251, Hampton Roads Transit reported in February.
