In the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, HRT provides lift equipped van service commonly known as Handi-Ride.
Hours: Handi-Ride operates 365 days a year. Service is provided during the same hours of operation as the regularly scheduled HRT buses.
Service Area: Handi-Ride service is available within 3/4 of a mile of regularly scheduled bus routes. For more information about service to your specific area, call 757-455-8010.
Who Can Ride: Handi-Ride service is available to certified passengers. To become certified, call 757-222-6087 and request an eligibility application. Once certified, you can schedule a ride by calling 757-455-8010 and TDD 757-244-2309. View documents, forms and application at the bottom of this page.
Making a Reservation: Reservation hours are from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily. Reservations must be made no later than 5:00 PM the day before you need transportation and you can reserve a ride up to 3 days in advance, at this time. Restrictions may apply for additional passengers and carry-on items.
Fare: Handi-Ride fare is $3.00 per one-way trip. Passengers are required to have exact fare for each one-way trip and are expected to pay when boarding. Handi-Ride does not provide cash change back or accept insurance, credit cards, checks and/or money orders as payment.
For your convenience, 10-ride ticket books are available exclusively at Farm Fresh stores and select HRT customer service centers. For information on Handi-Ride ticket sellers, please call 757-222-6087.
To order ticket books by phone or check on ticket order status, please call 757-455-8010 and choose option 1 for Handi-Ride then option 6 for information. To order Handi-Ride ticket books by mail, please complete the MV Transportation order form and mail with payment to:
